Grape shot war relic

from Carnegie Union, date unknown.

A unique relic of the war of the rebellion was presented to Capt. Thos. Espy Post to add to its display in memorial hall a few days ago. It consists of a large grape shot ball imbedded in a large pine knot, secured from a tree on Chickamauga battlefield in 1900 by A. B. Pitkin of New York, who presented it to the late James J. Brown of Ashville, N.C., and by him presented to Dr. R. L. Walker.

Dr. Walker has donated this relic to Espy post. The piece of wood surrounding the knot when taken out of the limb came out in the shape of a bird the dove of peace.
